Welcome to a Day in the Life of the Jonas Brothers/Denver, Colo.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle's features department was chosen by Jonas Brothers LLC. to hang out with the trio; Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas for the day on July 19th in Denver, Colo.
The Jonas Brothers were performing at Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre in Englewood, Colo. that night.

Jonas Brothers' soundcheck concert for Verizon Wireless winners and fans

Lucky Jonas Brothers fans got a sneak peek at the Jonas Brothers sound check.
The fans won a Verizon Wireless contest and were able to see them sing in Denver at Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre on July 19 during their sound check.

Verizon Wireless Mobile Recording Studio Part 1

Erik Niewiarowski is the video engineer on the Verizon Wireless Mobile Recording Studio Bus.
He give a behind-the-scenes look the Jonas Brothers' recording process and equipment. The bus is one of nine that the Jonas Brothers travel with.

Verizon Wireless Mobile Recording Studio part 2

Jesse Jensema explains how the Verizon Mobile Recordings Studio works on site at the Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre.
Essentially it is the Jonas Brothers' place for down time. They can go in there whenever they have an idea or just want to play around. The brothers aren't “recording” their new album, they are “working” on it.

I don’t think I have any ideas that are much different from what other writers would say, but I could stress a few principles that I believe in:

To be a good writer, a person has to be a good reader.

A person who hopes to be a writer should be willing to consider new ideas about writing, just as a person should be willing to work on improvement in areas such as grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and word use.

A good writer should be willing to learn in all areas, and then opportunities for application will come.

I think the most important thing a writer can do, besides write every day, is to read a lot. That’s how you learn what good writing is. The human race is lucky to have thousands of years of writing to instruct us – so dig right in. Good books are the diet of the writing mind, just like good nutrition and good exercise build the body. What you take in is what you will eventually put out. So read the best writers you can find. Who are they? That’s up to you. Let’s just say that a good book will delight and instruct and mystify and provoke and educate and satisfy you. There, that’s a nice wide definition. Read on, friends.

As for my advice to students, yeah, you need an education, and I think it is important to become educated in something other than just journalism so that you have a subject that you can follow because it interests you (say , economics or, in my case, history) and about which you can write with some authority. The fact is that most people who are experts are not capable writers. So if you can be BOTH, it really puts you miles ahead.
As for getting published in fiction, my advice is one word: persevere. So much of success comes from trying and trying and trying again. I love the quote from Michael Jordan (you can probably Google it) about all the errors he made, all the free-throws he missed, all the games he lost and how he kept trying, which is what made him a success.
I would tell students to respect the writing craft, continue to learn and work to become better at it. If they do this, and they don't give up, they will be successful. There is always the element of luck, but as Oscar Wilde said (the students will probably say, Who?) "the harder I work, the luckier I get."

I suggest that serious writers take a creative writing class, join a writing organization like Wyoming Writers, join or form a writing critique group, and read, read, read, the kinds of things they want to write, and practice writing. I suggest keeping something available to write on to jot down ideas when they come. Always read what you write out loud; it's a great way to catch errors. In reference to the setting of their stories, always think about the five senses. Make your setting come to life with them. We live through our senses, so make the reader truly feel, smell, see, hear and taste where the character is. It makes writing come to life. These are the things that have worked for me.

I'm scrambling busy (just returned from three weeks in Mongolia on a book project, preparing for my new book launch next week), but here are a couple of tips from me, for your students:
Writers read. Read everything – from the cereal box in the morning, newspapers and magazines, and of course, books, where you will get the most pleasure.

Think about your favorite books. Make a list of them. Sit down with each one and try to look at how it was written to understand the mechanics of how the words arranged on a page touched you. Look at how long or short the sentences are, how the dialog flows, what kinds of descriptive words are used. What tools did the writer use to make such a masterpiece?
I really believe that reading is key to being a good writer. Take that list of your favorite books, even if there are only one or two books that made the list, and show it to your librarian (at school, or at the public library, or both). They can help you find more books with similar writing styles that will help you expand the enjoyment list!

Local literary organizations calling for submissions

Serendipity Poets of Cheyenne is now getting ready to publish our annual Journal.
It normally comes out in early December.We haven't settled on a theme yet for this year. In general, we prefer poems that have something to do with life in Wyoming. Everything we publish is G-rated, since our audience includes students. Shorter poems, less than 32 lines, are preferred.
For now, the submission deadline is November 20.There are many ways to submit poems.
We discourage attached files since they often produce complications.
